As a Lifesaver, I agree to provide a safe, indoor-only home for the dog. I agree to foster until the animal is adopted, unless otherwise agreed upon. Should I not be able to continue to foster the animal(s) in my care, I will give Petey and Furends at least 1 week’s notice to allow them to make other arrangements. I will, at no time, leave the animal outside permanently.

I will, at no time, place the animal under the care of another individual. This does not apply to routine, daily care like dog walking, but to situations whereby I must leave town for more than one day whether unexpectedly or planned. In that event, I will contact Petey and Furends to discuss a mutually acceptable care-giving plan for the animal at least 7 days before such care is needed or, in emergency situations, as soon as possible. I will contact Petey and Furends before traveling overnight anywhere with my foster dog.

I will provide the animal with the structure and guidance needed to encourage positive behaviors. I will contact Petey and Furends immediately if I am experiencing behavioral problems with my foster so that they can provide me with the help and support I need. I will not use extreme or violent measures to reprimand or punish the animal. I will also not encourage disruptive, aggressive, or destructive behavior.

I have been encouraged to use the crate that I have been given to confine my foster dog when I am asleep and/or not at home. I understand that Petey and Furends cannot predict a dog’s behavior when left unattended. I understand that the dog may go to the bathroom in my house, chew my furniture, and/or exhibit destructive behavior out of fear, boredom, or anxiety. I understand that crating the dog when unattended serves to protect my belongings and the dog’s safety. I can be held responsible for any injuries or sickness that occurs if my foster animal is left uncrated or unsupervised.

I understand that Petey and Furends is not responsible for damage done by my foster dog to my house, my pets, or my belongings.

I will not take the foster animal outside my house off leash at any time (except in a fully fenced area). This includes taking my foster to a dog park prior to the completion of the three-week decompression, socialization, and training protocol. I understand that taking my foster into a dog park prior to understanding how they get along with other dogs can lead to serious issues for my foster dog as well as for the other dogs in the park.

I will contact Petey and Furends immediately if I believe the animal needs medical attention so that an appointment can be made with a participating Petey and Furends veterinary partner. I will not take the animal to my own vet or any vet that is not a participating vet without the approval of Petey and Furends. If I wish to take my foster animal to my own vet, I will be responsible for all charges associated with that visit.

I will contact Petey and Furends immediately if my foster animal shows signs of aggression so that appropriate steps can be made to remove the dog from my care or monitor the behavior with the help of a qualified trainer.

I will work with Petey and Furends staff to allow potential adopters to meet the animal. This may take place at my house, the potential adopter’s house, or an adoption event. I will also make arrangements with Petey and Furends to have the animal attend scheduled events. If I cannot bring the animal, I will work with the staff to arrange a pick-up/drop-off so that the animal can attend the events.

I understand that as part of my foster responsibilities I may have to provide transportation for my foster dog to a participating vet or trainer, if the need arises.

I will contact Petey and Furends immediately if my foster dog should get lost or stolen so that the appropriate steps can be taken to locate the animal.

I understand that Petey and Furends, at any time, has the authority to terminate my fostering if they feel I am not able to provide the animal with the structure, resources, or attention they need, if the animal and I are not a good fit, or if I am found to be in violation of any of the above rules and/or city, county, or state codes regarding animal welfare and possession. In this case, I will return the animal and supplies provided immediately to Petey and Furends.
