Where do the ANIMALS come from?

Petey and Furends has developed partnerships with shelters across the East Coast that are located in low-income rural areas. These areas are faced with pet overpopulation due to a lack of spay/neuter education and inadequate funding. Hundreds of highly adoptable dogs and cats find themselves at risk of euthanasia in these areas, and Petey and Furends works tirelessly to save as many as they can with the help of our dedicated volunteers, transporters, partners, and donors.

where do the Animals stay?

Petey and Furends depends on volunteer foster homes, called Lifesavers, and our partner boarding facilities to provide temporary care for our animals until they can find their permanent homes. The more volunteer Lifesavers we have, the more lives we can save. For more information on joining our Lifesaving Team, click here.

What is the Adoption process?

Our adoption process consists of the following steps:

  1. Fill out our Adoption Survey for Dogs or Cats.

  2. Our Matchmaking Team will be in touch with your landlord, veterinary office, and references (if applicable).

  3. Schedule a call with one of our experienced Matchmakers.

  4. Work with our Matchmakers to find your new best furend!

What are your adoption fees? What do they include?

Our adoption fees are based on the age of the animal you are adopting and include all vaccinations and medical care as deemed appropriate for their age, spay and neuter surgery (for animals over the age of 6 months), transportation fees, and any other care the animals has required while in our care. As Petey and Furends is a completely volunteer-run nonprofit organization, all proceeds and adoption fees go directly towards saving more animals.

  • All puppies and dogs under 8 years — $450

  • Mature dogs (8+ years) — $350

  • Single Cat or Kitten — $200

  • Two Cats or Kittens — $325

Please note: We require kittens to be adopted in pairs if they are under 4 months of age. If you have another cat in the home they can be up to 10 years old if they have lived with another cat, or 7 years old if they have never lived with a cat before.

Do you accept adoptions outside the DC area?

No, we do not allow adoptions outside of the DC Metropolitan Area. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to reach out to info@peteyandfurends.org

What are your requirements for adopters?

We expect all of our adopters to treat their animals as part of the family. We require that all of our animals are kept indoors and given adequate veterinary, nutritional, and behavioral care. We do require that all adopters sign a contract in which they agree to sign their dog up for at least four behavioral training classes to encourage proper socialization and increase the likelihood of developing a lifelong bond. We also require that all cat adopters agree not to declaw their feline furends.

How do you determine the breed of your animals?

Our breeds are a best guess determined by the animal’s appearance. We cannot guarantee that the breeds listed in our descriptions of our animals are 100% accurate, and we make no claims to their lineage or pedigree.

Do you know how big your puppies will get?

We cannot guarantee the size of a puppy; however, we can make an educated guess based on the puppy’s current size, current age, and potential breed mix. In cases where we know the mom, her size also helps in guessing the size of the puppy.

What happens if there are multiple applicants for one ANIMAL?

Our Matchmaking Team works very closely with prospective adopters to get through our approval process as quickly as possible. However, especially with puppies and kittens, we tend to get dozens of applications in a short time span. This is why we focus so heavily on matchmaking to ensure that we are creating a lifelong bond between adopter and animal. We encourage all of our potential adopters to keep an open mind throughout our process and know that our ultimate goal will be to help you find your new best furend.
