Meet Your Match

A guide on how we pair you
with your new best furend.

Petey and Furends uses research-based methods to connect prospective adopters with their new furry family members. We base our protocol on Meet Your Match developed by the ASPCA. Here’s how we do it:

Step 1:

We first assess all of our animals by putting them through various tests that place them in one of three color categories: Green, Purple, and Orange.

These tests help us to assess their friendliness, playfulness, energy level, and motivation or drive.

Step 2:

We then place them into more specific categories that will further help you determine if they might be a good fit for you.

For dogs we determine if they are socially, internally, or externally motivated:

  • Socially Motivated — Motivated by human contact and attention and will work hard for it. During the assessment they chose to spend most of their time engaging with the evaluator.

  • Internally Motivated — Motivated by stimuli that are difficult to control (e.g., smells, visuals, auditory). These dogs tend to be labeled “independent” and are not highly motivated by humans, food, or toys.

  • Externally Motivated — Motivated by a variety of stimuli. They will still work hard for those things that can be controlled but sometimes get distracted.

For cats we determine where they fall on the valiance scale:

  • High Valiance — Cat is likely to approach new stimuli.

  • Medium Valiance — Cat does not retreat nor do they approach new stimuli. Right in the middle!

  • Low Valiance — Cat is likely to retreat from new stimuli

Step 3:

Based on your survey results, we will work with you to find a dog or cat that will make the perfect match. Our goal is to find what works for you and help to establish a bond that will last a lifetime.

So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to meet your new best furend!
